Periodontitis is triggered by plaque buildup on the surfaces of the teeth and in the spaces between them. Initially, dental plaque is soft, but over time, under the influence of bacteria constantly present in the oral cavity, it hardens. This leads to the formation of tartar, which initiates a dangerous chain reaction: the tooth surfaces become rough, providing an ideal environment for bacterial growth. In response, the immune system triggers inflammation, resulting in the formation of periodontal pockets.
