Using a computed tomography (CT) scan, the doctor obtains a detailed three-dimensional model of the jaw and facial area. This level of visualization allows the smallest structures to be seen: from the position of nerves to the quality of bone tissue, which is not possible with a regular X-ray.

When is it necessary
to do a CT scan?

Before implantation — to assess the quality and volume of bone tissue, the location of important anatomical structures;
When preparing for wisdom tooth extraction — to see their position relative to nerves and vessels, and to plan a safe approach;
Diagnosis of maxillary sinus diseases, especially important before upper jaw implantation;
In complex root canal treatment, when it is necessary to see additional canals and hidden fractures;
When planning orthodontic treatment — for accurate assessment of the position of teeth and their roots; To detect cysts and neoplasms.

How a CT scan of the oral cavity is performed and preparation for it

No special preparation for CT is required. It is enough to remove metal jewelry and removable dental prostheses, if any. Inform the doctor if you are expecting a child — in such cases, the examination should be postponed.
For children under 5 years old, CT is prescribed only for special indications after consultation with a doctor. It is important to properly prepare the child for the procedure and ensure their calm state during scanning.
The procedure itself is quick and comfortable. You sit in a special chair while the scanner slowly rotates around the head for 20–40 seconds. To obtain a clear image, it is important to remain still. The doctor may ask you to hold your breath for a few seconds.
